Introduction
The skin is the largest organ of our body. It protects us from the environment
and regulates our body temperature. Skin is made up of millions of cells.
Each day thousands of these cells die, fall off, and are replaced by
new cells from beneath the outer layer of skin.
As we age, this process begins to slow down. Dark blotches and other
signs of aging and sun damage begin to appear. Our skin may become dull
and begin to form wrinkles. If you are unhappy with age spots, acne
scars, stretch marks, fine wrinkles or flaking skin, you might want
to consider Microdermabrasion which has been used in Europe for years.
Now this exciting procedure is the number two non-surgical cosmetic
procedure in the United States. It is helping men and women everywhere
experience remarkable improvements in skin texture regardless of skin
color. Microdermabrasion treatments combined with our skin care products
are a safe, comprehensive approach to skin care.
Microdermabrasion is a new "Lunch Time" approach
to skin resurfacing that stimulates the production of new skin cells and collagen. Less aggressive
than laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion is a non-surgical treatment
that does not require an anesthetic. Treatments take 35-45 minutes.
This mild yet effective treatment can remove fine lines and age
spots from around the eyes, lips
and neck. It can also improve mild acne that has not responded to other
methods of
treatment. One microdermabrasion treatment can offer the benefits of
a series of facial peels using glycolic acid, another "Lunchtime
Treatment".
While the effects of microdermabrasion are not as dramatic
as those of laser
resurfacing, recovery time after the procedure is also much shorter.
Though
there may be some redness afterwards, most patients can return to work
immediately.
Microdermabrasion uses a jet spray of mineral crystals to remove, then
vacuum, the outer keratin layer of the skin. Regular removal of the
keratin layer
can improve the appearance of:
- Small acne scars
- Fine wrinkles
- Dull skin
- Hyperpigmentation (melasma)
Some physicians also see an improvement caused by collagen tightening
on
the layer of skin beneath the layer treated by microdermabrasion. This
further
reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles though the effect is temporary:
microdermabrasion treatments must be repeated in order to sustain the
effect.
Following microdermabrasion treatment you may find that you experience
skin
peeling; your doctor will recommend that you use a moisturizer and sun
screen
following the procedure.
Microdermabrasion is not recommended anyone who has taken the acne
drug
Accutane within the past six months because there is a risk of creating
scar or
injury in someone who has taken Accutane.
And because there is a risk
that microdermabrasion may stimulate a new
outbreak, patients who have a history of herpes simplex (cold sores)
around
their lips should consider taking an oral antiviral medication before
undergoing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Microdermabrasion work?
It is a gentle exfoliation performed with a jet of fine mineral
crystals passing over the skin’s surface by creating a gentle
vacuum. The crystals lay on the skin along with dead/damaged skin
cells. The crystals gently exfoliate approximately 20-25 microns of
dead skin cells of the outermost layer (stratum cornuem).
Who can benefit?
Men and women of any skin type or colour. Anyone with aging, congested,
flaky, dry, devitalized, thickened, blemished, dull and skin damaged
skin will have it rejuventated and refreshed. Blotchiness, uneven skin
tones and texture will be improved.
What body areas can be treated?
Most common areas of treatment are the face, neck, chest, shoulders,
back, hands, knees and elbows.
Areas of concern which may be treated include:
- Face and
body peeling
- Lined,
wrinkled or damaged skins
- Dull congested,
thick or blemished skins
- Active
acne
- Scar improvement
- Hyperpigmentation
How many treatments will I need?
This treatment is meant to be progressive not aggressive. Generally,
results are more noticeable after the third treatment. Although, after
the first session the skin will appear fresher, cleaner, smoother and
softer for some clients. Usually treatments are performed every 7-10
days or every two weeks for a series of 6.
How long does each treatment take?
The actual treatment usually takes 15-40 minutes, depending on the
body area. The treatment is applied to clean skin. After, a moisturizing
cream with sun block is usually applied.
Any side effects?
Since there is minimal discomfort and no healing time, one can resume
normal activities immediately after a treatment. You may experience
a slight tingling and after, the skin may feel tighter, as if exposed
to the wind or sun. Your skin may appear slightly flushed. This generally
fades in 12-24 hours.
Is Microdermabrasion safe?
Yes. Microdermabrasion is non-invasive. The procedure only removes
the outermost layer of dead skin cells to reveal the fresher, younger
cells beneath. Regardless of your skin's condition, fine lines and
age spots may be erased and acne scars and stretch marks will become
less obvious.
What is treatment like?
Microdermabrasion treatments are not aggressive; they are slow and
progressive, and best of all, they work! Most patients find Microdermabrasion
treatments to be quite relaxing. The treatment is like a "superficial
skin polishing" using micro-crystals vacuumed through a delicate
hand piece. In as little as thirty-five minutes, this gentle, abrasive
technique efficiently produces satisfying results. Following the treatment,
we may treat your skin with specially formulated creams to further
soften and moisturize your skin. Treatments are applied through a
course of weekly or bi-weekly sessions, ranging from 2 to 12 weeks.
Why choose Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion takes less time than other more invasive procedures.
There is no recovery period, no discomfort and you can resume normal
activities immediately.
Who are the best candidates for Microdermabrasion?
The best candidates for Microdermabrasion are those patients that:
- cannot afford to take time off for healing from a chemical peel
or laser procedure.
- don't want to put off their outdoor activities like golf, tennis
or skiing.
- have skin sensitivities to chemicals or make-up.
- have acne-prone skin that has not responded well to other acne remedies.
- are younger and whose skin is showing early signs of aging.
Maintaining the results
Maintaining healthy looking skin is a daily task. Always wear SPF of
at least 15 to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Keep
your skin moist and fresh with daily cleansing and moisturizing using
specially formulated skin care products. Ask your skin care specialist
about recommendations for your skin care products.
We recommend a monthly touch-up treatment to help maintain your results.
